Perricone – The Hidden Treasure of Sicily

When we talk about Sicilian wines, the first names that often come to mind are Nero d’Avola and Grillo. However, there is another grape that deserves a place of honour: Perricone, an ancient and noble variety rediscovered in recent years thanks to its unique character.

The origins

Also known as ‘Pignatello,’ Perricone has deep roots in Sicily, especially in the western part of the island. The name Pignatello originates from Pignatidare, referring to the typical red clay soils of the Trapani area, where clay is traditionally used to make terracotta pots.

Perricone is a grape variety perfectly suited to Sicily’s arid, warm climate, showing remarkable resilience. It thrives in clay soils and prefers mid-altitude hills. The grapes are medium-sized, round, and deep blue-purple.

In the past, Perricone was widely cultivated and primarily used in blends to add structure and colour to Sicilian wines. In recent years, however, it has gained new life as a single-varietal wine

BAGLIO DIAR – VELATA Perricone

At Baglio Diar, we believe that offering an authentic experience means choosing grape varieties that truly represent our island. Our interpretation of this grape variety is beautifully expressed in our organic wine, VELATA Perricone.

Our vineyards are located in the hills of Salemi, characterised by clay soils and a vibrant Mediterranean climate.

The winemaking process includes a 15-day maceration in stainless steel tanks at 25°C, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then stays for six months in small French oak barrels to enhance its characteristics, before an additional aging period in stainless steel tanks.

In just one year on the market, VELATA Perricone has already received several awards in international wine competitions, including a Gold Medal at Mundus Vini and the Berliner Wine Trophy, as well as a Silver Medal at Decanter.

Sensory Profile and Pairings

With an intense ruby hue, our VELATA Perricone offers notes of blackberry, liquorice, black tea, cocoa, and toasted hazelnut. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with lively tannins and vibrant freshness. Flavours of black cherry, cinnamon, peanuts, and coffee create a long, enveloping finish.

This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roast lamb, and aged cheeses. You may also enjoy it with game stewed with herbs and black olives. For the best experience, we recommend serving it in a tulip-shaped glass at 16°C.

A wine with a bold and intense character. VELATA Perricone represents the magic of our Sicilian island.
